Honouring Matrescence
"Matrescence is the physical, psychological and emotional transition a woman goes through when becoming a mother"
Throughout the journey of motherhood, the body moves through profound cycles and transitions, from fertility and conception, through pregnancy and into the physical and emotional transformation of postpartum. Each stage places different demands on the body and nervous system and deserves care, nourishment, and time. In many cultures, these transitions have long been honoured through intentional practices, from Zuo Yuezi in China to Cuarentena in Latin America, where women are supported through rest, warming foods, and community care, particularly during pregnancy and the first few weeks after birth.
These days, however, women are often asked to push through and quietly carry both the physical and emotional strain. Fertility journeys can bring uncertainty; pregnancy can feel both joyful and overwhelming; and the transition into motherhood can be deeply disorienting. We want to reclaim a more holistic way of caring for women, one that honours cycles, respects transition, and places nourishment at its centre, supporting both body and mind across fertility, pregnancy, and the postpartum period.
Why nutrition is so vital during pregnancy and postpartum
Consistent, intentional nourishment supports hormone balance, energy levels, emotional resilience, healing, and recovery, to help the body adapt through periods of change rather than becoming depleted.
When these stages are rushed or undernourished, depletion can linger, showing up as fatigue, mood changes, sleep disruption, or longer-term burnout - but it doesn’t have to be this way. With the right nourishment, the body is remarkably capable of restoring its balance, its strength, and its resilience.
How we nourish you
Warmth for Wellness
The cooking process breaks down fibres and proteins in the food, making nutrients more bioavailable and the food easier to digest. This allows the body to focus more energy on healing and recovery.
Pack with Protein
Protein provides the building blocks the body needs for repair, hormone production, and steady energy. Including a good source of protein in each meal helps stabilise blood sugar, support muscle and tissue recovery, and prevent energy crashes during periods of increased demand.
Iron Rich
During pregnancy, blood volume nearly doubles, increasing the demand for oxygen transport and energy. This makes iron essential for supporting the production of healthy red blood cells for both mother and baby. Adequate iron intake also helps reduce fatigue and supports overall resilience during pregnancy and recovery.
Steady Energy
Eating regularly and including slow-releasing carbohydrates helps keep blood sugar stable and energy consistent throughout the day. This supports focus, mood, and digestion, while reducing crashes and strain on an already taxed system.
Comfort is Key
Comforting foods help to calm the nervous system, support digestion, and create a sense of safety during times of change. When meals feel grounding and familiar, the body can relax, absorbing nutrients more easily, and conserving energy for repair and restoration.
Balanced Blood Sugar
A balanced blood sugar supports steady energy, mood, and hormone balance. Eating regular, well-balanced meals helps reduce stress on the body, preventing energy crashes and allowing resources to be directed instead towards repair and restoration.
